History

The Sterling Systems & Controls, Inc. founding personnel worked for National Manufacturing in Sterling, Illinois, within their controls department in 1971. They separated from National in 1972 and established Sterling Controls, Inc. One of the first systems completed was a batching system for an agricultural fertilizer facility which utilized continuous batching technology. Process automation of feed mill and poultry processing facilities became a focus as Sterling Controls’ industry focus was agricultural markets.

Sterling Controls, Inc. was bought by the owners of Prater Industries in 1987 and the company supplied electrical process controls and automation for products that Prater manufactured. This allowed Prater Industries to provide complete system solutions (e.g., grinding, pulverizing, material handling, and batching systems). In 2000, Sterling Controls, Inc. changed its name to Sterling Systems & Controls, Inc., emphasizing the company’s real focus on “Systems”, including process equipment, electrical controls and process automation, and mechanical process equipment.

Industrial Magnetics, Inc., purchased both Sterling Systems & Controls, Inc., and Prater Industries in 2014. Since 1961 Industrial Magnetics has been a leader in manufacturing innovative, engineered permanent magnet and electromagnetic solutions. Today Sterling Systems & Controls, Inc. continues to be part of the Industrial Magnetics family of companies.

Sterling Systems & Controls moved into its current facility in 2011, an unused elementary school that was purchased and renovated for the company’s use.  A facility expansion is currently being initiated to more than double production capacity and it will be completed in 2022.

Company Culture

Sterling Systems & Controls has a culture and set of standard practices that illustrate our commitment to our customers, the achievement of our customer’s objectives, and the solutions we provide. Even prior to the sale of a custom engineered system a project manager is assigned to the proposed system. The project manager is a senior engineer with more than 20 years of experience in engineering, as well as in coordinating and managing projects for Sterling Systems.

The company structure and culture commitment to customers doesn’t end at commissioning the system a customer purchases. There are no annual service contracts required. If a customer calls for service or technical support because of some problem they may be experiencing, the Sterling Systems focus is on getting the customer back up and running as quickly as we can. To best service customers our company culture and structure ensure that customers can report any problem, and we are available to work on the problem at any time of day, any day of the week, 24/7.
